Broome Western Australia with Narelle Bouveng - Escape writer and photographer

Broome – it is up there as my all time favourite destination. The remoteness of the location coupled with some of the most incredible colours and textures in a landscape I have ever seen.

It truly is breathtaking and something about how you feel there is like a spiritual connection with our mother country. I have heard others say they felt it too.

NARELLE’S TOP ACCOMMODATION TIP

Broome is a great place for families, but stay in a place with a pool, because it gets stinking hot. We stayed at Oaks Cable Beach Sanctuary, which has 5 pools, so the kids always had somewhere new to try.

It also has spacious self contained rooms with laundries that were a bonus with all that red dust that will invade places you will not even believe it can…

NARELLE’S BROOME MUST-DOS

1. PLANNING PAYS

Really research your flights. It can be expensive to get there, but there are specials too. Check out flying to Darwin and crossing over the top (Darwin is worth exploring too), or there are some direct flights from Brisbane or Sydney that cut down on your in-transit time.

2. LEVEQUE TREK

Make the trek to Cape Leveque (or fly there with King Leopald Air) – it is as beautiful as it gets with red ochre cliffs spilling onto white sand beaches and into cooling turquoise seas. You will feel like you are the only ones there on the spectacular edge Australia – which has to be seen to be believed.

3. BIRD’S-EYE VIEW

An aerial visit to Horizontal Falls is also well worth the investment (again with King Leopold Air). David Attenborough calls this place “the eighth wonder of the world” – so you know you are in for something pretty incredible.

4. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Give yourself ample time to explore. A week is not even enough to truly discover the Kimberley and without a doubt, you will want to come back before you even leave so save yourself some $ and stay longer first go.

5. BUT FIRST, COFFEE

For great coffee, breakfast and a delicious lunch – Zoo Keeper Store at Cable Beach.

6. LIFE IS SWEET

If you are in Broome centre, grab a mango smoothie from the Green Mango Cafe in Carnavon Street – made from fresh local mangoes and homemade gelato.
